What should we wear for family photos?

Great question.

I think first and foremost the correct answer is…whatever you want!

But, if you would like more direction… here are some of my thoughts.

I think its great if everyone can stay within the same ‘story’ - so you don’t have someone in a ball gown and the person next to them in shorts and sneakers - unless that’s the look you are going for!

Of course the location and context for your photo sessions will help you pick what to wear! But if you need some inspiration… here are some colour story options you can use for summer family photos.

  1. Neutral Natural — beige, ivory, olive, denim

  2. Warm Coastal — terracotta, sand, cream, sage

  3. Soft Summer — blush, pale blue, oatmeal, stone, eucylptus

  4. Cool Coastal — navy, soft white, pale teal, driftwood

  5. Bright & Bold — pinks, coral, butter yellow, seafoam, sky blue, brighter greens, large floral patterns

Neutral coloured outfit options for a family photoshoot in NSW during summer

We also want to make sure that you stay away from being too matchy matchy or wearing intricate patterns. Now of course, if you want to lean into the matchy matchy vibes, I’m all for it - matching Christmas pjs? Denim on denim on denim? yes.

I collected some family outfit inspiration photos and popped them into a Pinterest page, and I also got chat gpt to help…but also you can just reach out for help if you need it!
